Born in New York. He married Margaret A. Page (1808) on 1828 in Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada. They had four children. In 1846, the family moved to Denmark, Lee County, Iowa. Joseph VanValkenburg was a blacksmith by trade and had a farm. He was elected to House of Representatives for the 6th General Assembly (1856). He and his wife moved to Cook County, Illinois where his daughter Catharine Van Valkenburg resided.
