Born in Warren County, Ohio, in 1813. He married in 1836 Eliza Snodgrass, born in Dauphin County, Penn., in 1815. Mr. Sawyer came to Lee County in 1850, and located in Pleasant Ridge Tp.. He then removed to Montrose and settled on the farm in 1865. Mr. Sawyer was elected to the Legislature in 1856, served one term. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was chosen by the Presbytery of Iowa as a delegate to the General Assembly which met at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1866.
