Born November 8, 1814, in Highland County, Ohio. At the age of 15 he went to Indiana where he became a member of the M.E. Church. He came to Iowa in 1838 and in 1851 entered the Iowa Conference as a traveling preacher. In 1854 he married Nancy Nicholson. He served through the war as a chaplain. In 1856 he served in the Sixth Iowa General Assembly representing Louisa County.
