Born June 6, 1820, in Licking County, Ohio, and commenced life as a farm boy. He was but 20 years old when he came to Burlington, and from his early days he spent his life in our midst, a prosperous and fairly well-to-do business man, an upright, conscientious and honest citizen. He was president of the First National Bank in Burlington for 25 years. He was married to Miss Octavia Lorain of Burlington, Iowa, October 12, 1846. In1851 he was elected mayor of Burlington and served as its executive during the great cholera year. In 1852 he was re-elected, and in 1853 there was no opposition and he was the unanimous choice of the people. In 1856 he was elected to the state senate and served in that capacity for four years.
