Born in 1827 in Bloomfield, Jackson County, Ohio. He practiced law in Chariton, Iowa. He married Mary L. Dodge November 13, 1853, at McLean County, Illinois. In 1862 he served in Company S, 34th Iowa Infantry Regiment and was mustered out in February 1864. He was elected to represent Lucas County in the Ninth General Assembly, 1862.
