Born March 5, 1831, in Columbiana, Ohio. He spent his early life near Salem, Ohio. He came to Iowa in 1854 locating at Shanghai in Keokuk County, later called Coal Creek. He was married to Miss Hannah C. Fawcett in 1859. During the Civil War he was elected to represent Keokuk County in the Ninth General Assembly, 1862. He held several county offices in Keokuk county. He was active in the Underground Railroad. He moved to Sigourney in 1870, then removed to Des Moines to live in 1881.
