Born December 17, 1827, in Madison county, New York. He got his education in the public schools of his native county, in the seminary of Casenov, New York, and a short term in the Academy of Fredonia, New York. He came to Iowa in April 1855 and settled at Millersburg, in Iowa county where he engaged in the milling and contracting business. He was married April 1, 1862, to Sarah Jane Griffith. Mr. Sweet was very active in civic and social life on the pioneer days of the early settler. He taught school, was justice of the peace, elected to a seat in the lower house of the Iowa Legislature in 1864. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
