Born in 1829 in Ross County, Ohio. Dr. Hurst was commissioned in the Iowa Nineteenth Infantry on August 27, 1862. He was mustered out September 12, 1862, and resigned February 26, 1863. He was elected as a Republican to the Iowa House of Representatives for the Tenth General Assembly (1864-1866) from Davis County. From 1880 through 1884 Dr. Hurst was in practice with Dr. Wilkens in Oskaloosa. He was on the Mt. Pleasant Wesleyan University Board of Directors and the Mt. Pleasant Hospital for the Insane Board of Trustees. Dr. Hurst and his wife moved to California for health reasons.
