Born in Hyland County, Ohio, July 1, 1822, being the fourth child of Robert W. and Sarah L Garrett. His early life was spent in his native State where he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Spencer in 1846. She died in March, 1859. Mr. Garrett was again united in marriage with Rachel Stella Yost, October 20, 1859. In 1851 Mr. Garrett came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Van Buren County. In the fall of 1863 he was elected to represent Van Buren County in the Tenth General Assembly. In the spring of 1807, having sold his farm in Van Buren County, he removed to Davis County where he resided until March 1882, when he removed to Decatur County. He was a man of sterling qualities and deep convictions.
