Born December 9, 1817, in Oxford, Worcester County, MA. When quite young, his parents moved to Connecticut. At sixteen years of age he went to New York to live. In 1841 he came to Iowa with his uncle, W. O. Clark. In 1843 they came to Monroe County. In 1850 he was married to Sarah Bishop, by whom he had five children. In 1845 he was elected the first sheriff of Kishkekosk County, now Monroe County. He filled the office of county supervisor for about fifteen years. Was elected a representative of Monroe County to the 10th General Assembly of Iowa. He joined the Day lodge of I. O. O. F. at Eddyville in 1854. In 1855 he was one of the charter members to organize the Monroe lodge, No. 81, of which he has always been a member.
