NICOLAS BAYLIES Born at Woodhouse, Vermont, April 9, 1809, and moved the same year to Montpelier, which was his home until 1836. After preparatory studies he was admitted to the state university from which he graduated with high honors in 1827. He began the study of law under the direction of his father. In 1842, he married Miss Harriet Cahoon. He came to Des Moines in 1858, and the next year removed to a farm in Walnut township. He was the Polk county member of the tenth general assembly in 1864, and enrolling officer of five townships west of the Des Moines river and outside of the city the same year. He served several terms on the board of supervisors.
