Born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, February 18, 1817. He was educated for a physician and removed to Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1849, where he practiced his profession. He was elected to the Senate of the Fifth General Assembly in 1854. He was again a member of the Senate in the Eighth and Ninth General Assemblies, serving in the regular and extra sessions. During the Civil War he was surgeon of the Seventh Infantry for several months. In 1863 Dr. Udell was for the third time elected to the Senate, serving in the Tenth and Eleventh General Assemblies. He died in Denver on the 11th of April, 1903.
