More than 77 years ago in Berkeley County, West Virginia, Jonathan Thatcher was born. About two years after his birth his parents moved to Ohio where they resided until 1839 when they came to Van Buren County and settled near Mt. Sterling. In 1847 he was married to Miss Malinda Sayre of Scotland County, Missouri, who removed with him to a farm near Keosauqua where Mrs. Thatcher died in 1884. To them were born six children. Near the beginning of the Civil war Mr. Thatcher enlisted in Company E., Fifteenth Iowa Infantry. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg and was with Sherman in the march to the sea. At the close of the war he was elected Representative in the Eleventh session of the Iowa legislature and was postmaster of the next session. In 1885 he was married to Mrs. Samuel Rabb.
