Born in Ohio in 1830, and died in Oregon in 1911. He married Margaret Ann Gould (born 1832 in Pennsylvania) in 1852 in Preble, Preble County, Ohio. They had three children He was a Methodist Clergyman. He was one of the original members of the Upper Iowa Conference and entered the Conference in 1852. He was licensed to preach the same year that he entered the Conference. He went West to Helena, Montana in 1873 as pastor of the old Broadway Church. On May 17, 1876 the Reverend Shippen chops down the famed "Helena's Hanging Tree" near Last Chance Gulch. The residents of Helena were indignant. He was sent from Helena to Butte. Brother Shippen was at Butte for but a year. He retired from the effective ranks after about twenty years of earnest labor, his health improved, and he followed secular pursuits for some years, but has always remained a member of the old Conference.
