Born in Plainfield, N. J., October 14, 1833. His boyhood days were spent at Plainfield. At 17 years of age he moved to Chicago, where he was engaged in the clothing business until he removed to Iowa. While in Chicago he married Elizabeth T. Reeves, to whom were born six children. Mrs. Runyon died and on December 31, 1871, Mr. Runyon married Mrs. M. E. Winslow. In 1857 Alexander Runyon moved to Benton county, Iowa. From I860 to 1864 he served as treasurer of Benton county, and from 1864 to 1866 as representative to the state legislature. In 1889 he was again appointed county treasurer, elected that fall and served two more terms.
