Born in Fulton county, Illinois; December 4, 1837, and came to Ottumwa from Montezuma, Iowa in 1867. He was a Civil War veteran; having been a first lieutenant in Company F. 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the advance on Corinth, Vicksburg and at Mission Ridge, where he was wounded. He returned to Montezuma following the war and was elected to the state legislature as member of the House of Representatives on the republican ticket in 1865. Mr. Emery was married in Oskaloosa May 2; 1867, to Mrs. Sarah C. Holland. Mr. Emery was actively engaged in the practice of law in Ottumwa. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
