Born in Wigtownshire, Scotland, September 2, 1826, and died at Garden Grove, Iowa, July 23, 1901. He was the son of John and Margaret Brown. He married in 1850 and he and his wife came to the United States immediately after their marriage. They lived for a number of years in McHenry county, Illinois. They removed to Garden Grove, Iowa, in 1869. He was fairly well educated and was a man of more than ordinary intelligence. He represented Decatur county in the Eleventh General Assembly, 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were both charter members of Pleasant Ridge Grange, P. of H., and were active members of that Order.
