Born in Newport, New York, September 15, 1831. His boyhood was spent on a farm in Herkimer county, New York. At the age of fourteen years he went to Whitestone Seminary, where he remained four years. Mr. Brayton graduated from Hamilton College at Clinton, New York, in 1853. He attended the law school connected with the college and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme court of New York in April, 1854. In the fall of the same year, he came to Delhi, Iowa, and soon after coming to Delhi, formed the law partnership with A. E. House.. He was elected state senator in 1864, which office he held until 1868. In 1870, Mr. Brayton was elected Judge of the District Court of the Ninth Judicial District, and served from January 1871 to July 1872, when he resigned as Judge to resume the practice of law at Delhi. From 1872 to 1880 Judge Brayton was engaged in litigation involving large property interests with railroad companies. Judge Brayton married Helen M. Martin at Delhi, Iowa, May 4, 1859.
