Born March 14, 1828, in Long Island, New York. He came to Iowa in 1855, and settled on present farm in 1857. He married Emily Ballinger in 1857. He was a representative from this county for two years. He enlisted. in Company K, 18th Iowa Infantry in 1862 and was· discharged in 1865; he held a commission as captain when he was mustered out.
