Robert Barrett Lockwood was born on February 29, 1816, in Durham County, England. On May 16, 1840, he married Elizabeth Longridge, and together they had six children. During his early years in England, Robert worked as a notary public in London. In 1851, Robert and Elizabeth, along with their children, emigrated to the United States and settled in Dubuque County, Iowa. After arriving, Robert became a farmer and became actively involved in his community, serving on the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors in 1867 and 1868. Following Elizabeth's death in 1871, Robert remarried the following year. In 1872, he wed Mary Ann Bryan Chapline in Farley, Iowa. Robert Barrett Lockwood passed away on August 20, 1895.
