Born in Batavia, N. J., September 22, 1822, and in 1837 he and two brothers went to Ingham Co., Michigan where he remained twenty years. While in Michigan Mr. Williams was engaged in the lumber business and in a flouring mill, and later entered the mercantile business. He afterward was admitted to practice and opened a law office, remaining the same until 1857. After traveling through Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa he located in Hesper in 1858, and on December 31st, 1860, was married to Caroline Tabor, daughter of Russell Tabor. In many ways Mr. Williams was a man of more than ordinary ability, he having represented his district in the 8th, 9th 10th and 11th Iowa General Assemblies, 1866, 1868, 1870. He was also a member of the legal profession in this state having been admitted when he first came here. Mr. Williams took a lively interest in horticulture and landscape gardening.
