John D. Miracle was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1844. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1866 and by 1870 was practicing law in Crawford County, Iowa. That same year, he was elected to represent the 69th district in the Thirteenth Iowa General Assembly as a Democrat. In 1874, he served as county judge for Crawford County. In 1878, he married Mary Emma Avis of New Jersey in Philadelphia. They had four children. By 1880, the family was living in Mitchell, South Dakota. Later he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he died on May 26, 1917.
