Born April 7, 1828, in Louisville, Kentucky. He moved to Winterset, Madison County, Iowa in 1866. He owned 160 acres of land that he farmed. He was elected as a State Representative in the Thirteenth Iowa General Assembly, 1870. John Hartenbower was in the California Gold Rush. He was married to Anna McCaleb in 1853. He was a member of the Populist Party. On Feb. 18, 1873, he was elected as a "Master" of the Grange No. 895. He started out in politics as a Democrat.
