Born in Clonmore, Kings County, Ireland, January 21, 1823. At his home in Ireland he had the advantages of a good English education. In 1843, when but 20 years of age and the glowing reports of the vast resources of the United States, he immigrated to this country landing at New York. In 1854 he removed to this state and located in Otter Creek Township, this county. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Dunne. He was one of the largest land holders and most successful farmers in Otter Creek Township. He has occupied a prominent place in the history of the county. He served as supervisor of Jackson County representing the northern or 6th district acting as chairman of the board for much of the time. In 1870 he was a member of 13th Iowa General Assembly and acquitted himself with honor and credit in that position. He also served as treasurer of his school district. In whatever position he occupied he acted with a knowledge of his duties and never disappointed his friends in his responsibilities and trustworthiness.
