One of the pioneer settlers of Wapello County, came to Iowa in 1843, while it was yet a Territory, and took up 167 acres of land on section 30 in Agency Township. He was born September 16, 1813, whence he removed to Illinois in 1836, and then to Louisa County, Iowa, and from there came to this county. In early manhood he was married in Hancock County, Illinois December 29, 1838, to Miss Jeanette Danbenheyer. Mrs. Dudley departed this life September 5, 1844. Mr. Dudley was again married, December 17, 1846, to Miss Polly A. Dennison, a native of Illinois. Mr. Dudley in earlier years took an active part in politics and held various local offices. He served as County Coroner, and was elected by the Republicans to the Thirteenth General Assembly in 1866, serving six years, and has been Justice of the Peace for many years. He took an active stand against the use of whisky and did everything in his power to advance the temperance cause. He was an extensive reader, keeping himself well posted upon all general and local matters, and was actively interested in the cause of education. He belongs to the Free-Will Baptist Church, of which he was Deacon for many years, and was an active worker in the Sabbath-school always ready to lay aside personal interests for the good of others. Mr. Dudley was possessed of considerable means when he came to this county, which he made good use of, and disbursed in a judicious manner.
