A native of Blair county, Pennsylvania, born in 1816. After a number of years of life on a farm he removed to Hollidaysburg, P.A., and was a proprietor of a hotel there. In 1853 he came to Davenport and continued for a time in the hotel business being proprietor of the old LeClaire house. Mr. Lowry was a prominent figure in Pennsylvania politics and at the age of 29 received an appointment as aid on the staff of Governor Johnson. After coming to Iowa he continued to take a deep interest in public affairs and served his fellow citizens as mayor and later as a Scott county member of the state senate serving in the Thirteenth and Fourteen General Assemblies, 1870-1872. He was also a delegate to the national republican convention which nominated General Grant. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
