Born in Delaware County, New York, June 24, 1822. In 1834 he removed with his parents to Ohio and in 1852 located at Port Byron, Illinois, where he was in business for four years. He was married to Mary A. Winslow, September 14 1852. In 1856 he came to West Liberty as one of the proprietors and manager of the town site company. He resided on a farm at the edge of town for many years and since that time has lived in West Liberty. He represented Muscatine County in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth general assemblies of Iowa. Prior to that time he had been a member- of the Muscatine county board of supervisors for several years and afterwards served as trustee for the asylum for the insane at Mt. Pleasant. He was made a Mason in Chardon, Ohio, lodge No. 92, A. F. and A. M., January 10, 1852. After coming west he assisted in organizing Snow lodge at LeClaire and was the first master after coming to West Liberty. He assisted in organizing Mt. Calvary lodge No. 95, of this city, being a charter member. Mr. Evans was prominent and active in politics and temperance work taking an active interest in the affairs of the nation, state, and county.
