Born in Riga, Monroe County, New York on August 17, 1834. He married Fannie Atwater on August 28, 1861 in Dodge County, Wisconsin where she was teaching school and living with her brother. They had four children. By 1870 the family had moved to Goldfield, Wright County, Iowa. John was a dry goods merchant. He was Goldfield’s Postmaster appointed on March 22, 1871. Mr. Parmalee served as a representative in the 15th General Assembly 1877-1878 from Wright County, Iowa. His later years were spent in Shasta County, California.
