Residing in Scott Township, Henry County, Iowa, he was born in Belmont County, Ohio, July 10, 1825, the son of Robert and Mary (Hopper) Lyons. Until eighteen years of age H. R. Lyons resided with his mother, but at that time went to West Carlisle, Ohio, where he was engaged as clerk in a general merchandise store. He remained there three years, and then formed a partnership with Samuel Shockey, and continued in business for three years. On the 2nd of June, 1855, Mr. Lyons removed to Henry County, Iowa. He was united in marriage, September 1, 1847, to Elizabeth McKee, a native of Coshocton County, Ohio. Mr. Lyons and his wife are both members of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and is a Republican in politics, but was a Whig before the organization of that party. He has held the office of County Commissioner for three years. In the fall of 1863 was elected to the Tenth General Assembly of the State Legislature, and was again elected to the Fifteenth in 1873. He was Township Trustee, which office he held for a number of years.
