Born in Ohio, August 1, 1824. His mother died when he was but 12 years old, and the partial care and responsibility of the family rest on him. He never attended school after his 12th year, but entered a printing office and by application and study he became one of the best scholars in the community, becoming proficient in both Latin and Greek. He became a member of the Christian church early in life and began preaching at once, which vocation he followed throughout life. In 1873 he was elected by the people of the legislature, and served on term very creditably.
