Born in Saratoga County, New York, in 1836; came to Iowa in 1859, but soon went to Arkansas, where he remained until July, 1861, when he returned to Iowa and in 1862 settled at Lansing; followed surveying until 1871. He then removed to Waukon, and has since followed law practice. Mr. Dayton has been county surveyor, and was during two terms member of the legislature. He was married in 1874 to Miss Mary M. Wilcox, a native of N. Y.; they have one son and one daughter.
