Born in Rockbridge County, Va., October 2, 1831. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1849. After some years' experience in journalism in Jasper County, he secured an interest in The Casey Vindicator, with which he was connected up to the time of his death. He enlisted in Company G, 18th Iowa Infantry, where he was appointed orderly sergeant. He held many positions in civil life, the most important of which was that of member of the Iowa House of Representatives from Jasper County in the 15th general assembly. An earnest advocate of temperance, genial in his intercourse with others, and a friend and protector of birds and dumb animals, he was a man whose list of friends was coextensive with his acquaintance.
