Born near Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1821. In 1846 he was married, to Miss Matilda Bottom. Mr. Reed owned and operated a large water power flouring mill on Cedar creek, southwest of his city, where he also erected a fine residence. He also was engaged in stock raising and farming. In earlier years he held several offices of honor and trust, twice representing his county in the state senate, while the capital was at Iowa City and also at Des Moines.
