BARBER A. CLEVELAND Born in the state of New York, near the foot of the Catskill mountains, April 2, 1822. He was married in that state to Miss Mary E. Long, and in May, 1856, he came to Iowa, and settled at Sigourney. He was a man of force and prominence, and he soon took a foremost place in the community. In 1878 he was elected to the legislature as representative of Keokuk County, and served one term. He was otherwise honored by his fellow citizens, and might have had further political preferment had be cared for it, but this he steadfastly refused, preferring the privacy and quiet of a life not devoted to the public service.
