Born at Randolph, New York, July 2, 1837. While still a youth he left his native state and moved to Galva, Illinois. Here he supported himself and completed his education. He responded to Lincoln's first call for troops and enrolled his name April, 20, 1861 as Captain of Co. D., 17th, Illinois Volunteer infantry for three months and when his time was out, reenlisted for three years and served his full time. On January 4, 1864, he married Miss Minnie Wright at Galva, Illinois, moving to Hancock County in 1869. His career in Garner is well known. As a pioneer he had much to do in helping the growth of both town and county. He was public spirited and contributed both time and money to town enterprises. He studied law in Galva and practiced many years in Garner. He was half owner and editor of the Hancock Signal a republican paper. During the winter of 1876-7, he served as representative in the Iowa State Legislature and has held numerous town and county offices. He was an honored member of Bethel Lodge. No. 319, A. F. and A. M. Bethel Chapter 116, R. A. M and a charter member of Parker S. Dow Post No. 485, and the First Congregational Church of Garner.
