Born February 26, 1829, in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland. His parents came to the U.S. in 1841 settling near Alton, Ill. He lived for a time in St. Louis, Circleville, and Salem, Ohio, and six years in the city of Havana, Cuba. In 1859 he married Miss Mary J. Blackburn of Salem, Ohio. In 1867 he came to Victor, Iowa, and with John Blackburn opened a grain business. He has served the town of Victor as Mayor, represented this district in the State Senate and filled a number of minor offices.
