Born December 19, 1822 in Meredith, New York. He was a school teacher in New York and then Kentucky. He came to Maquoketa, Iowa in 1847 to be a clerk in a dry goods store. He became a partner after a year's service as clerk. He was married on October 14, 1852, by Rev. I. W. Windsor to Miss Mary C. McCloy of Maquoketa. His sons Burr and George were successors to their father in February 1884 at the pioneer store. Pierce Mitchell was elected mayor of Maquoketa in 1879. He was a democrat in politics. He served his county as a Representative in the 15th Iowa General Assembly and as a Senator in the 18th and the 19th Iowa General Assembly.
