Born in Piqua, Ohio, March 22, 1843. He received a liberal education, graduating at the Law School of Albany. He located in Des Moines, was admitted to the bar and began practice in 1866. He was elected on the Republican ticket District Attorney for the Fifth Judicial District in 1874, serving four years. In 1881 he was elected to the State Senate, serving in the Nineteenth and Twentieth General Assemblies. He was elected to Congress in the Seventh District in 1886 to fill a vacancy. He died on the 4th of November, 1895.
