Born May 8, 1834, in Wheeling, W. Virginia, and came west with his parents in 1856, locating near Dyersville on a farm. He went into the general merchandising business in this city in 1861. When the town was incorporated in 1873, he served as one of the first aldermen and in 1874, he was the town treasurer. He represented Dubuque County in the Twenty-second General Assembly, 1888. He was connected with the late B.E. Linehan in the banking business in Dubuque and was also a promoter and friend of the Dubuque Sioux City railroad. He was married to Miss Mary Josephine Botsford April 28, 1863.
