Born in Wayne county, Indiana, April 9, 1847; he died at Linden, Dallas County, Iowa, July 1, 1912, He removed to Dallas county, Iowa, with his parents in 1856, settling in Linn township, which remained his residence thereafter. He was a student at the State University when he enlisted in Company C, Forty-sixth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was an excellent example of a useful, prosperous citizen, during his lifetime acquiring and holding 630 acres of land in Iowa, and 520 in Nebraska, to which he rapidly added value, in addition to that of the general rise in values of Iowa lands. Meantime he served the public in an excellent way in school district, township and county affairs, and was elected to the Twenty-second and Twenty-third General Assemblies, 1888 and 1890, as a representative, where his service embraced the chairmanship of the committees on agriculture and State Agricultural College and membership on temperance, railroads, public highways and elections. On October 11, 1871, Mr. Thornburg married Miss Jennie Vestal, Boone township, Dallas County. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Active lodge, No. 529, A. F. & A. M. of Linden and served 14 consecutive years as secretary. He also was connected with Mt. Etna lodge, No. 360, K. P. of Linden.
