Born in Morgan County, Ohio, January 27, 1841. He grew to manhood in Ohio. On August 8, 1862, he enlisted in Company C, 97th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, where he served three years. He participated in many major battles, and was severely wounded at Missionary Ridge. In 1866 he moved to Dewitt, Iowa, where he married Nancy Ellen Mummey, with whom he lived in loving companionship for nearly fifty years. He moved to Sac county in 1878, and settled on a farm east of Odebolt. In 1890 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Sac county, and faithfully discharged his duties as a public official.
