Born in Pennsylvania and came to Iowa in 1858, settling on a farm. He was elected to the State Senate in the fall of 1891 on the Democratic ticket. He was highly esteemed by his colleagues in the last General Assembly, as well as by his constituents of all parties at home. He was a man of sound judgment, excellent business ability, and became an influential member of the Legislature.
