Born in County Roscommon, Ireland December 10, 1844, and came to Boston in 1852, where he attended school. He learned the trade of stone cutter and letterer and worked at the monumental line for 10 years. He came west in 1865, and lived for a time at Joliet, Illinois. On March 7, 1868, he landed among the hills west of Anamosa, now known as Stone City. There he opened the Champion quarries and developed a business which grew and thrived. During his residence at Stone City Mr. Green carried on farming in connection with his other work. He took great interest in the raising of the better grades of stock of all kinds. He was the first quarryman in the country to use hydraulic power for stripping and also the first to use large charges of black powder in blasting for quarry work. He established the Iowa Stone Company at Cedar Rapids. Mr. Green was a man of generous nature and cultivated civic pride and civic ambition. He married Miss Ellen Kane at Joliet, in 1875. Mr. Green was elected to represent Jones-Cedar Counties in the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Iowa General Assemblies, 1892-94. He was also a very ardent supporter of the bill providing for the State geological survey, and to his efforts is largely due the success of the measure. In 1904 he was a democratic congressional candidate in the Fifth Iowa District. Previous to his election to the Senate he held the offices of road supervisor, school director and township trustee. Mr. Green died February 25, 1920 in Cedar Rapids.
