One of the much-talked of men for candidate for the supreme judgeship last summer in republican politics was the Hon. W. R. Lewis of Montezuma. His political friends urged him to represent them in the senate this winter, so he accepted the nomination for that office and was elected. Senator Lewis is a native of Ohio, born in Muskingum county, October 12, 1835. He has been a resident of Iowa since 1857, before which location he had lived in Illinois one year. When he removed to Iowa he located in Montezuma which has ever since been his home and place of business. His political career has been an enviable one in every way. He was elected superintendent of schools in Poweshiek county in 1882, and served part of the term, resigning to fill the office of county clerk of courts, which office he held two years. He was admitted to the practice of law in December, 1866, and practiced continuously till January, 1881, when he assumed the duties of judge of the circuit court of the sixth judicial district, succeeding Judge Blanchard, who had occupied the office since the time of its creation. In 1887 he begun service as judge of the district court, holding that office till the close of the year 1890, when he was succeeded by Judge Dewey, the present incumbent. After this Senator Lewis resumed the practice of law in Montezuma. He made an excellent record in his judicial capacity, and is very popular with the people at large. He is a successful lawyer and a prominent citizen. He brings to the senate a practical knowledge and experience that will be of great benefit in legislative matters. Senator Lewis was married to Miss Mary E. Cutts of Burlington, Vt., September 12, 1865. Mrs. Lewis died in April, 1893.
