Cass and Shelby counties will send a democrat to the Twenty-seventh General Assembly. Dr. J. M. Emmert, a prominent physician of Atlantic, is the man, and a wise choice by his democratic friends. He was born in Washington county, Maryland, June 13, 1846. He was reared in his native state and received his primary education in the public schools. He later attended the Cumberland Valley institute at Mechanicsville, and from there his course was finished in the Millersville Normal school. On leaving school he commenced reading medicine in Waynesboro, after which he entered the Jefferson Medical college of Philadelphia, from which he was graduated in 1872. On receiving his degree he came west, locating at Hamburg, Iowa. He practiced there two years successfully, then removed to Atlantic, which city has since been his home. He was married to Miss Ida Washabaugh of Pennsylvania, October 28, 1873, and to them six children have been born, of whom only one is living. Senator Emmert is a member of the American Medical association; of the Iowa State Medical Society, of which he was elected president in 1889; of the Missouri Valley Medical association, of which he was first vice-president and second president. For some years he was a member of the Railway Surgical association, and has been the local surgeon for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific railway at Atlantic for twenty years. He is a member of the Iowa State Board of Health, receiving his appointment from Governor Boies in 1892. In 1875 he was elected city recorder and re-elected in 1876. He was president of the school board in 1882 and 1883. Fraternally Dr. Emmert is a member of the Pymosa lodge No. 172, A. F. & A. M., of Ophir chapter No. 84, R. A. M.; of Kedron commandery No. 42, K. T., and the Mystic Shrine. Dr. and Mrs. Emmert are Presbyterians, the doctor an elder of the Atlantic church. A man of sterling worth as a citizen, of much ability as a physician, he will enter the senate amply qualified to represent his district with credit.
