Born near Mt. Vernon, Linn county, Iowa, May 21, 1842. During his boyhood he assisted his father on the farm in the summer and attended the district school in the winter. The years 1861 and 1862 found him a student in Cornell College. In the spring of the latter year he was tendered a clerkship in the pay department of the United States army, but believing his active services were more needed, he resigned his clerkship and enlisted as a private in Company A, 31st Iowa Infantry, August 16, 1862, for a term of three years, or during the war. He was soon promoted to sergeant major of the regiment, and on March 16, 1863, to be second lieutenant of the company, and on July 29, 1863, to the captaincy. He participated in all of the engagements of his company and regiment until the close of the war, his regiment being a part of the Iowa brigade of the 3rd division, 15th army corps. Army of the Tennessee. At the close of the war he returned home for a short time, but in the fall of 1865 he moved to Marion, Iowa, and engaged in the lumber business, following the same until the summer of 1891, when he was elected cashier of the First National Bank of Marion, Iowa, which position he now holds. In all matters of interest to his town and county he takes an active part. He is independent in his opinion and always frank to express them. He is prominent in the Grand Army. Being one of the best known men in the county and in close touch with all classes of people, his election by a majority of 2,000 as a Republican, would indicate the truth of the assertion.
