Born in Putney, Windham County, Vermont, September 21, 1830. His first schooling was in the primitive schools of Vermont. In 1839, when he was but nine years old, his family moved to the territory of Iowa and settled in Dubuque. He prepared for college in the public schools of Dubuque and entered Illinois College at Jacksonville, from which he graduated in 1849. Returning to Dubuque, he began the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1851. Mr. Crawford was elected city recorder and was afterward three times reelected. He was a member of the Old Washington Guard for a number of years before the Civil War. He was appointed deputy United States marshal for the northern district of Iowa. In 1870, he engaged in railroad building and constructed several miles of the Dubuque and Bellevue road. In 1881, he was elected alderman of the Fourth ward serving six years. Again in 1890 he was chosen to that office and was reelected in 1892 and in 1894. He has been a republican most of his years and served as county chairman and attended state and other conventions of the party. The last office held by Colonel Crawford was that of senator from Dubuque County.
