Representative from Fremont county. Born in Hendricks county, Indiana. Moved with parents to Fremont county, Iowa, In 1851. Attended district school and was in school at Tabor, Iowa, at the breaking out of the Civil War. Enlisted in Company A, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, August 10, 1861; appointed fifth sergeant of the company on muster in. Promoted to third sergeant November 1, 1862. Re-enlisted as veteran December 12, 1863, promoted to first sergeant January 1, 1864, first lieutenant January 20, 1865. Captured in action at Jones' Lane, Arkansas, October 11, 1862, returned paroled November 8 and exchanged and returned to service December 1, 1862. Served in the field throughout the war, often in command of the company. His home has been continuously on the same farm for fifty-five years. Elected Representative in 1906. A Republican in politics.
