Representative from Iowa county, was born near Dungannon, Noble county, Ohio, June 19, 1855, of New England parentage. He is a son of Elvin Tilton, deceased, who represented Iowa county in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth General Assemblies. Came with his father to Montezuma, Iowa, in 1864, and to the Tilton homestead in Dayton township, Iowa county, in 1865. Was educated in the rural schools, and married to Mary J. Love, a school teacher of Malvern, Ohio, January 29, 1880. Was engaged in the grain business at Brooklyn, Iowa, in 1881-2, and in the mercantile and live stock business at Keswick, Iowa, in 1882-3. Since that time he has been actively engaged in farming, stock-raising and shipping, having shipped stock to and from the markets at Chicago, Kansas City, and Omaha. Was township clerk for seven years, trustee for six years, school director nine years, secretary of school district ten years. Elected Representative in 1908. A Republican in politics.
