Representative from Shelby county, was born near Bloomfield, Davis county, Iowa, March 16, 1861, of English parentage. The son of a farmer he spent his youth on the farm attending the district school in winter until the fall of 1888 when he attended the graded schools in Bloomfield for one term, then entered the Southern Iowa Normal and Commercial Institute where he pursued a course in science until June, 1881. Taught his first term of school at what was then known as Round Grove schoolhouse in Roscoe township, Davis county, beginning September 5, 1881. In March, 1882, he went to Shelby county where he has since resided. Taught school for three years, and at the election in 1885 he was elected county superintendent of schools, to which office he was re-elected in 1887 and in 1889, serving three consecutive terms. Served as assistant secretary of the Senate in the Twenty-fourth General Assembly. In 1893 opened a real estate, loan and abstract office in Harlan and has followed this business, together with operating his farm, continuously since. Has served as mayor of Harlan, and is now serving his twelfth year on the Harlan school board. Is married and has a family of four children. Elected Representative in 1906, and re-elected in 1908. A Democrat in politics.

Representative from Shelby County. Born near Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa, of English parentage. He attended the rural schools of his native county until 1878, when he entered the Bloomfield graded school for one term, at the close of which he matriculated at the Southern Iowa Normal and Commercial Institute, in which he pursued a course in science until June, 1881. On September 5 of that year he commenced his first term of school in what was then known as Round Grove district, five miles south of Pulaski. In March, 1882, he went to Shelby county, where he has since resided. From 1882 until the fall of 1885 he taught school. At the annual election of the latter year he was elected county superintendent of schools, to which office he was three times elected in succession. In 1892 he was the caucus nominee of his party in the Twenty-fourth General Assembly for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Senate and served as such throughout that session. Soon after this he opened a real estate and abstract office in Harlan and has followed this business, together with operating his farm, up to the present time. In the spring of 1905 he was elected mayor of Harlan to fill a vacancy for a period of one year, declining another nomination to this office. Is now serving his tenth year on the school board of his city. Has a wife and four children. Elected Representative in 1906. A Democrat in politics.
